Russell joined Mercedes in 2022, replacing Valtteri Bottas and joining seven-time World Drivers’ Champion Lewis Hamilton. He chose to change his red helmet design to a predominantly black design out of respect for Michael Schumacher. In his first race as a full-time Mercedes driver, the Bahrain Grand Prix, he qualified ninth and finished fourth. He took his first Mercedes podium at the Australian Grand Prix, benefiting from a pit stop during a safety car period to start sixth and finish third. He failed to reach Q3 at both the Emilia Romagna and Miami Grands Prix but recovered to finish the races fourth and fifth respectively. More podiums came at the Spanish Grand Prix, which he led for four laps, and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he benefited from the retirements of both Ferraris to finish third.
